Dr Gillian Baker – involving public in research at the NIHR Exeter Cinical Research Facility

I’m Gillian Baker, I’m the manager of
NIHR Exeter Clinical Research Facility It’s our job at the CRF to make it easy for
everyone to be able to help improve healthcare through research, and when
I say everyone I mean everyone What we’ve done is created a gateway
called Exeter 10,000 where anybody can participate in research and become a volunteer. So far we’ve recruited 10,000 volunteers that’s about ten per cent of our
adult population here in Exeter These volunteers donate blood samples, they
give us consent look at their medical record and they allow us to contact them about
any research that they can participate in in the future. This allows us to provide our academics
with the precious samples that they need for their research and it also helps us
to find the right people for the right clinical trials really quickly. So far
we’ve provided over 40,000 samples for research and provided volunteers for
over 70 clinical trials. The best thing about working on the Exeter 10,000
project is that it’s managed by the people of Exeter so the people that
participate in the research are also on the steering committee that manage the
research and so it feels like one great big family, so the researchers, the people
of Exeter, and the clinicians all working together for the common good to improve
healthcare.
